Dr. Gregory G. Schwartz is a Professor of Medicine (Division of Cardiology) at the University of Colorado and Chief of the Cardiology Section at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado (USA). Dr. Schwartz’s research interests focus on preventive cardiology, lipids, and acute coronary care. His clinical research has focused on trials of lipid and metabolic interventions in coronary heart disease, including placebo-controlled cardiovascular outcome trials that establish the efficacy of intensive statin treatment (MIRACL, 2001) and PCSK9 inhibition (ODYSSEY OUTCOMES, 2018) after acute coronary syndrome. Dr. Schwartz also directs a large animal physiology laboratory that investigates translational questions in myocardial energy metabolism and ischemic protection. In ICoLA 2019, he will deliver a lecture entitled “Metformin: Is it a Cardiovascular Drug?” based on his scientific research experience.

This session, entitled “Things to Consider When We Treat Dyslipidemia,” is a clinical session and is designed to provide a forum for understanding important aspects of the treatment of dyslipidemia. The mainstream treatment for dyslipidemia is lowering LDL using statin. However, there are many things to consider when treating dyslipidemia. The invited speakers will discuss ethnic differences in CV risk, various aspects of statin therapy, and whether extremely low LDL is really okay.

In many epidemiologic studies, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels are inversely associated with incident cardiovascular disease. However, recent pharmacological intervention studies do not support a direct causal relationship between HDL cholesterol and cardiovascular disease prevention. Therefore, this session, entitled 'New concepts in HDL,' is designed to provide new insight into HDL and functional aspects in relation to cardiovascular disease prevention.
Prof. Robert S. Rosenson from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, USA, will talk about dysfunctional HDL or apolipoprotein A-I and clinical applications to new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular disease prevention. Our second speaker, Prof. Sung Hee Choi, from Seoul National University, Korea, will talk about new drug targets related to HDL cholesterol. The last speaker, Prof. Hayato Tada from Kanazawa University, Japan, will discuss controversies in the association between HDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.

The use of dietary supplements in the prevention of CVD is becoming increasingly common. Experimental and clinical trials provide evidence for the efficacy of dietary supplements; however, further studies are needed to ascertain the precise mechanism and effects of nutritional supplements. Our first speaker, Eunmi Park from Hannam University, Korea, will discuss the role of vitamin D and metabolomics regarding dyslipidemia. Our second speaker, professor Manohar Garg from University of Newcastle, Australia, will talk about dietary supplements that have anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects and their role in the risk of cardiovascular disease. Our last speaker, Hyunjung Lim from Kyung Hee University, Korea will introduce findings from human clinical trials of dietary supplements for the prevention of cardiometabolic risk in Koreans.

Dysregulation of lipid metabolism has been implicated in the development of cardiovascular events and metabolic diseases. Representative lipotoxic metabolites include diacylglycerol, ceramide, and phospholipids. In this session, the mechanism of sphingolipids and phospholipid metabolites will be presented for hepatosteatosis, lymphocyte infiltration, and regulation of signaling pathways. Dr. Scott Summers from the University of Utah, USA, will talk about the role of dihydroceramide desaturase and ceramide in hepatosteatosis and metabolic dysfunction. Our second speaker, Dr. Toshiro Okajaki from Kanazawa University of Medicine, Japan, will talk about the role of sphingomyelin synthase 2 in lymphoma infiltration. Our third speaker, Professor Mee-Sup Yoon from Gachon University of Medicine will present the role of phosphatidylcholine Metabolism. Our last speaker, Dr. Se-Yun Kim, Korea advanced institute of Science and Technology will discuss the role of inositol phosphate metabolism in the regulation of the inositol polyphosphate signaling pathway.

Dr. Goldberg is a Director, NYU Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. Dr. Goldberg graduated from MIT, received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Goldberg has published over 200 articles including written numerous book chapters, editorials, and reviews. Dr. Goldberg’s research has focused on abnormalities of lipoprotein metabolism, macrovascular disease in diabetes, and the role of triglycerides in atherosclerosis. Today, he will present an interesting topic associated with fat metabolism and diabetes in the heart.

Dr. Sripal Bangalore is a Professor of Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine in New York, NY, USA. Dr. Bangalore’s interests are in comparative effectiveness studies of cardiovascular diseases, particularly stable ischemic heart disease, acute coronary syndromes and hypertension. Variability is the law of life, and as no two faces are the same, so no two bodies are alike, and no two individuals react alike and behave alike under the abnormal conditions we know as disease. In ICoLA 2019, he will deliver a lecture entitled “Cardiovascular Risk Factors - It's Time to Focus on Variability” based on his scientific journey.

Management of LDL cholesterol is recommended to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular events and associated mortality. “The lower, the better” has been supported in recent research on statin, ezetimibe combination, and PCSK9i therapies. However, concerns regarding the safety of extremely low LDL cholesterol remain. Thus, we will discuss the safety of extremely low LDL cholesterol in various clinical situations.
Prof. Brian A Ference from the University of Cambridge, UK will talk about the safety of extremely low LDL cholesterol from an analysis of FOURIER, SPIRE, and the Cholesterol Treatment Trialists Collaboration. Our second speaker, Prof. Dae Ho Lee, from Gachon University, Gil Medical Center, Korea, will talk about the characteristics of subjects with very low serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the risk for intracerebral hemorrhage.
Our third speaker, Prof Ki-Hoon Han, Asan Medical Center, Korea, will discuss the management of patients with low LDL cholesterol in hypertriglyceridemia. Our fourth speaker, Prof In-Kyung Jeong from Kyung Hee University Hospital, Korea, will present an overview of genetic and acquired low LDL cholesterol.

The health effects of air pollution are serious – one third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer, and heart disease are due to air pollution. This has an equivalent effect to that of smoking tobacco, and one much higher than the effects of eating too much salt. Meeting the goals of this session, ‘Air pollution effects on cardiovascular disease,’ could improve awareness of the influence of air pollution among health providers. This session will explore perspectives on cardiovascular disease attributed to air pollution from different sources.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease whereby fatty deposits, rupture-prone plaque, and fibrosis accumulate in vessel walls. Major organs, including the heart, liver, brain, and kidneys could be damaged and, in turn, atherosclerosis can increase morbidity and mortality rates. In this session, four prominent researchers will give lectures about novel targets and therapies of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Professor Kyu-Tae Kang from Duksung Women's University, Korea, will talk about how to screen for angiogenic and anti-angiogenic agents using a novel three-dimensional assay. Professor Jan F.C. Glatz from Maastricht University, the Netherlands, will present recent experimental results regarding the power of lipid metabolism with regard to energy supply and demand in cardiac contractile dysfunction. Dr. Tae-Sik Park from Gachon University, Korea, will give a lecture on the previously unidentified role of sphingolipid metabolism associated with hepatic steatosis. Dr. Terje Larsen from The Arctic University of Norway, will focus on anti-obesogenic treatment modifying cardiac lipid metabolism.

This session, entitled “Familial Hypercholesterolemia is Not Far Away,” is a joint symposium with the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS). Although familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is not an extremely rare disease, many clinicians think it is not common. If we will try to find out FH, it would be frequently met in real clinical practice. In this session, invited speakers from the Korean Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis (KSoLA) and EAS will present on different FH topics.
