Dr. Walsh was Arm V. Chobanian Distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine. Recently, he moved to University of Virginia School of Medicine. He has published many outstanding papers in the journals such as Science, Nature, and Nature Medicine. His laboratory has examined molecular events that drive cardiovascular cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. Over the past decade his laboratory has been investigating mechanisms of inter-tissue communication and how these systems contribute to physiological versus pathological tissue growth in the cardiovascular system. His recent research topic is clonal hematopoiesis in cardiovascular area. Based on the recent findings, he will announce new findings on clonal hematopoiesis as a new causal risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

This session is organized to focus on recent interests on variability of cardiovascular risk factors. Not only uncontrolled or elevated levels of the risk factors, but also fluctuations of the risk factors might affect vascular outcomes. Here, we present wonderful researchers who were in frontiers in studying variabilities in cardiovascular risk factors.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has been the main focus in primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease in patients with dyslipidemia. Although lipid-lowering therapy with statins significantly reduces excess risk of cardiovascular events, risk remains, and there is room for improvement. Dr. Khurram Nasir from Yale School of Medicine has contributed a tremendous amount of work to the improvement of dyslipidemia care with imaging modalities, especially coronary artery calcium scoring. He will discuss how imaging modalities can continue to improve dyslipidemia care. Our second speaker, Prof. Sang-Hak Lee of Yonsei University College of Medicine, will address the role of genetics in dyslipidemia care. Our final speaker, Prof. Jung-Won Suh from Seoul National University College of Medicine, will demonstrate novel IT techniques that can help us improve dyslipidemia care.

Significant advances in our knowledge of the dietary factors related to CVD (dyslipidemia) have been made by various studies. These findings have been important in the development of dietary guidelines and recommendations. Sunmin Park from Hoseo University, Korea, will discuss the use of functional foods in the prevention of dyslipidemia. Our second speaker, Kazumasa Yamagishi University of Tsukuba, Japan, will talk about dietary factors in cardiovascular disease observed from a large-scale cohort study. Lastly, Yunkyoung Lee of Jeju National University, Korea, will talk about the latest findings regarding the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia.

Single-cell analysis is the study of genomics and transcriptomics at the single cell level. Due to the heterogeneity seen in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell populations, analyzing a single cell makes it possible to discover mechanisms not seen when studying larger cell populations. In particular, many single-cell analyses of cardiovascular diseases are ongoing and some of them have been published in top-tier journals. In this session, Dr. Hae-Ock Lee from Samsung Genome Institute, Prof. Jong Kyoung Kim from DGIST, and Seongho Park from UNIST will speak on the concepts and applications of single-cell transcriptome and epigenetic analyses.

Dr. Stefano Del Prato is the Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pisa School of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Diabetes, University of Pisa, Italy. He is a past president of the Italian Society of Diabetology, a past vice president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and is the current chairman of the Scientific Committee of the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes. Dr. Del Prato's research interests have always been concerned with diabetes and, in particular, the physiopathology and therapy of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance syndrome. In ICoLA 2019, he will deliver a lecture entitled “The Benefits of GLP 1-RA and SGLT2 Inhibitor for the CV Outcomes: What is Similar or Different?” based on his keen insights.

(New Insight on Intensive Treatment for Hypertension and Dyslipidemia Management)

Dr. Yvan-Charvet is a professor in Department of Molecular Medicine, Atip-Avenir, Fédération Hospitalo-Universitaire (FHU), France. He has published many excellent papers in the journals such as Nat. Rev Immunology and Circulation Research. His research has focused on the topics related with cholesterol, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. He is also performing studies associated with the immunometabolism. Today, the metabolic reprogramming of macrophage in atherosclerosis beyond cholesterol will be discussed.

The results of recent large-scale clinical studies and the development of new medications and diagnostic tools are changing the guidelines for dyslipidemia. In this session, our speakers will discuss hot issues that have arisen in recently published guidelines. Prof. Soojoong Kim from Kyung Hee University, Korea, will talk about recently published results regarding ezetimibe and its practical role in recent lipid guidelines. Our second speaker, Kataoka Yu from the National Cerebral & Cardiovascular Centre, Osaka, Japan, will discuss a recently launched, popular group of drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors, how their development is affecting lipid guidelines, and future perspectives. In the 2018 ACC/AHA lipid guidelines, coronary calcium score is included as a marker for statin treatment. Our third speaker, Prof. Joshua Mitchell from Washington University School of Medicine, USA, will present the background and practical use of coronary calcium scoring. Finally, Prof. Su Jin Jeong from Sejong General Hospital, Korea, will discuss the present LDL targets in several lipid guidelines and differences between guidelines.

Research on arterial stiffness is clinically important, as it is associated with cardiovascular prognosis. Emerging evidence has demonstrated the importance of arterial stiffness in various cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, such research can provide new insight into the underlying pathophysiology. In this section, our first speaker, Prof. Thomas Weber from Klinikum Wels-Grieskirchen, Austria, will talk about the role of arterial stiffness in heart failure. Our second speaker, Jin-Sun Park from Ajou University Hospital, Korea, will discuss arterial stiffness and circadian patterns in blood pressure. Our third speaker, Masanori Munakata from Tohoku Rosai Hospital, Japan, will talk about the usefulness of brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity. Our final speaker, Hack-Lyoung Kim from Boramae Medical Center, Korea, will discuss arterial stiffness and coronary artery disease.

This session, entitled “Novel Approaches in Lipidology and Atherosclerosis,” is designed to provide a place for clinicians and basic researchers to learn about novel approaches beyond traditional techniques in this field. In this session, invited speakers will present information about recent advances in cholesterol analysis and clinical applications of metabolomics in metabolic diseases. It will also cover clonal hematopoiesis for metabolic dysfunction.

This session is organized to strengthen friendship and intimacy between KSoLA and JAS. These two organizations share similar patient characteristics and also similar genetic background in the patient population. The speakers from two associations would talk about non-statin lipid-lowering agents for residual risk management.

JLA is the official journal of the Korean Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis and publishes original articles and reviews relevant to lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis. JLA was converted to full length English journal since this year and it is preparing to leap one step. The Committee of Publication of JLA has selected the top articles among papers published in JLA in 2019. The authors of the selected articles will share results of their outstanding researches.

Patients with diabetes mellitus are at high risk for cardiovascular complications. Among these complications, heart failure was relatively under-recognized until recently. Our first speaker, Prof. Chi Young Shim from Yonsei University, Korea, will present an overview of the association between the heart and diabetes mellitus. Among the novel medications used for the treatment of diabetes, GLP-1 receptors and SGLT2 inhibitors have shown cardiovascular benefits in recent cardiovascular outcome trials. Our second speaker, Prof. Vincent Woo from the University of Manitoba, Canada, will talk about the cardiovascular effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Our third speaker, Prof. Subodh Verma from the University of Toronto, Canada, will review the cardiovascular effects of SGLT2 inhibitors. Lastly, hypoglycemia, a major factor limiting the treatment of hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, has a considerable impact on the cardiovascular system. Our last speaker, Prof. Seung-Hyun Ko from Catholic University, Korea, will present and review data regarding the impact of hypoglycemia on cardiovascular disease in diabetes.

Hypertension and dyslipidemia are important cardiovascular risk factors and treatment targets. In this session, we are talking about techniques for management of blood pressure in dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. Prof. Jinho Shin from Hanyang University, Korea, will talk about optimal blood pressure targets for reducing atherosclerosis. Our second speaker, Hideki Ishii from Nagoya university, Japan, will discuss the regressive effects of ARBs and statins on coronary plaque. Our third speaker, Hye Jin Yoo from Korea University, Korea, will talk about the management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Our last speaker, Manlio Vinciguerra from St'Anne University Hospital, Czech Republic, will talk about the anti-hypertensive effects of a fasting mimicking diet (FMD).

Atherosclerosis, formerly considered a bland lipid storage disease, actually involves an ongoing inflammatory response. Recent advances in basic science have established a fundamental role for inflammation in mediating all stages of this disease, from initiation through progression and, ultimately, the thrombotic complications of atherosclerosis. In order to understand the multifaceted role of inflammation in atherosclerosis, our first speaker, Prof. Veronique Angeli from National University of Singapore, Singapore, will talk about the role of LYVE1+ macrophages in atherosclerosis. Then, Ekaterina Koltsova from Fox Chase Cancer Center, USA will talk about the interplay between cytokine signaling and microbiota in atherosclerosis. Our third speaker, Gary Sweeney from York University, Canada, will discuss the role of innate immune component lipocalin-2 as, responselipocalin-2. Our last speaker, Aimin Xu from The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, will talk about fibroblast growth factor 21 as a protector against atherosclerosis.

This session is organized to strengthen friendship and intimacy between KSoLA and IAS. This year's theme is on lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], which is considered as a strong risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and whose circulating levels are known to be genetically determined. However, recently developed lipid lowering drugs have shown to reduce Lp(a) levels. In addition, Lp(a) levels were shown to be correlated with development of metabolic diseases. The speakers from the two organizations would review recent literature regarding Lp(a) in human diseases.
